Norman Leo Geisler

Norman Leo Geisler was born on July 21, 1932 in Warren, Michigan. After his conversion to Christianity at age 18, he pursued extensive theological and philosophical training. Geisler earned a Th.B. (1964) from William Tyndale College, a B.A. in philosophy (1958) and an M.A. in theology (1960) from Wheaton College, and completed a Ph.D. in philosophy at Loyola University (1966). He also did graduate work at Wayne State University, the University of Detroit, and Northwestern University.

Geisler taught philosophy of religion and systematic theology at several evangelical institutions, including Detroit Bible College (1963–66), Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (chair of Philosophy of Religion, 1970–79), and Dallas Theological Seminary (Professor of Systematic Theology, 1979–88). In 1981, he served as the lead expert witness for creationists in McLean v. Arkansas (the “Scopes II” trial).

A prolific author, he wrote or edited over 90 books and hundreds of articles on apologetics, inerrancy, ethics, Calvinism, and more. In 1997, Geisler co-founded Southern Evangelical Seminary, and in 2008 he co-founded Veritas International University (formerly Veritas Evangelical Seminary) in Santa Ana, California, serving there as chancellor and Distinguished Professor of Apologetics and Theology until his retirement in May 2019. He passed away on July 1, 2019 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
