Dr. Stephen Charles Meyer

Stephen C. Meyer is an American historian of science, author, and former educator best known for his advocacy of Intelligent Design (ID). After earning a B.S. in physics and earth science from Whitworth College in 1981, Meyer worked at Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) before pursuing graduate studies at Cambridge University, where he received an M.Phil. (1987) and Ph.D. (1991) in the history and philosophy of science. His doctoral dissertation, “Of Clues and Causes: A Methodological Interpretation of Origin-of-Life Research,” examined philosophical and historical approaches to the origin‐of‐life question.

Meyer began his academic career as a philosophy professor at Whitworth College in 1990, later serving on the faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University until 2005, when he devoted himself full-time to the Intelligent Design movement. In 1996, he co‐founded the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture (CSC), where he serves as Senior Fellow and Director. He has authored several influential ID books, including Signature in the Cell (2009) and Darwin’s Doubt (2013), arguing that certain features of biological systems point to a purposeful designer rather than unguided natural processes.
